From Brown Envelopes to a National Coach Travel Business: Phil Stokes Reflects on 30 Years with Johnsons
9th June 2026
This month marks an incredible milestone for Johnsons Coaches, as long-serving driver Phil Stokes celebrates 30 years with the business.
While many career stories begin with a carefully planned path, Phil's journey into coaching started with a bold decision that surprised almost everyone around him.
After passing his PCV test in March 1994, Phil was working as an Area Manager for Dixons Stores Group, overseeing 25 stores across the Midlands. Despite a successful retail career, he found himself drawn to the coach industry and, against the advice of many, made the decision to take a significant pay cut and join Johnsons.
"Everyone said, 'Have you gone mad?'" Phil recalls. "But money isn't everything. Being happy with what you do is far more important."
Back then, Johnsons looked very different to the business we know today.
The company operated from what Phil describes as a rough field on Liveridge Hill, complete with a portacabin, a workshop shed and no gates. The company offices were based in rooms within the Johnson family home on the High Street, while weekly wages were paid in cash by Joan Johnson in small brown envelopes.
After taking six lessons with Pete Thornett, Phil passed his PCV test and began driving part-time alongside his management role. It wasn't long before he realised he had found his calling.
Just two weeks after passing his test, Phil headed off on his first tour a two-driver ski trip to Austria alongside Mick Hill.
"It was after that tour that I decided coach driving was for me."
The operation itself was a far cry from the sophisticated systems used today. Traffic planning was managed from an A5 sheet of paper with a pencil and rubber, private hire bookings were coordinated from the family home, and a small team kept everything running smoothly.
At the time, Johnsons had just eight drivers and eight allocated coaches.
In June 1996, Phil officially joined Johnsons as a full-time driver, beginning a career that would span three decades and witness extraordinary growth across the business.
From a family-run operation with a handful of vehicles to one of the UK's leading coach travel providers, Phil has seen first-hand how the industry, technology and customer expectations have evolved.
Yet despite all the changes, the values that attracted him to Johnsons in the first place remain the same – a passion for people, travel and delivering great experiences.
As Phil celebrates 30 years with the company, everyone at Johnsons Coaches would like to thank him for his dedication, professionalism and commitment over the years.
Here's to an incredible 30-year journey and many more miles ahead.
