Day One: Arrival |
We depart from Henley and travel by coach through the changing scenery towards North Wales. On arrival in Caernarfon, we settle into the Celtic Royal Hotel, our base for the next four nights, with time to relax and enjoy the hotel's comfortable surroundings before dinner. |
Day Two |
Today we board the Welsh Highland Railway in Caernarfon for a memorable journey to the picture-postcard village of Beddgelert. Sit back in comfortable heritage carriages as the train twists around seemingly impossible bends, climbs steep gradients and passes through magnificent mountain scenery beneath the slopes of Snowdon. We return by coach to Caernarfon, where the remainder of the afternoon is free to explore at leisure. |
Day Three |
This morning we visit Bodrhyddan Hall, an imposing Grade I listed home set within several hundred acres of North Wales countryside and home to Lord Langford's family for over 500 years. During our guided tour, discover stories from the hall's vibrant past and view fascinating collections including arms and armour, fine art and a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy and sarcophagus. There will also be time to enjoy the colourful gardens, with cascading lawns, a Japanese walk and a formal Victorian parterre. Later, we continue to Llandudno for free time in this classic seaside resort before returning to the hotel. |
Day Four |
Today we travel to Porthmadog to join the famous Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest independent railway company in the world, established in 1832. Our journey to Blaenau Ffestiniog covers 13½ miles of outstanding scenery, from glorious coastline and ancient oak woodland to mountains, rivers and castles. Look out for Porthmadog Harbour, rolling peaks and dramatic valleys as the railway climbs towards the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. After some free time to explore, we return by coach to the hotel. |
Day Five |
After breakfast, we leave Caernarfon and begin our journey home. Sit back and relax on board the coach as we travel back through Wales and into England, returning to the Henley area with fond memories of our Welsh Highlands Express holiday. |
